US dollar
The US dollar is one of the most important currencies in the world. It has maintained its position as the main reserve currency for many years, a result of the dollar's historic consolidation as a key international currency.
US dollar - history of the currency
Coins called "dollaro" were produced in the Spanish colonies in the Americas. One coin had a value of eight reales - this was the case until the end of the 17th century, when the dollar became a separate national currency. The dollar symbol, a crossed-out S, also derives from the way the value of $1 is written as an eight in brackets. Over time, the notation underwent further transformations until it acquired its current form.
As for the name of the dollar itself, its "great-grandfather" is the thaler, a coin minted from ounces of silver in the 16th century. The value of the dollar was convertible into an ounce of gold for many years - finally, references of the value of the dollar to gold were only abolished in 1973.
Until the second half of the 19th century, dollars functioned only in coin form, while the first banknotes appeared during the Civil War in 1861. Right from the start, the dollars had a distinctive green reverse to make them more difficult to counterfeit.
In the 19th century, various banking systems were introduced in the United States and financial crises such as the Panic of 1837 and the banking crisis of 1907 contributed to the need for a more centralised financial system.
US dollar today
Established in 1913, the US Federal Reserve System, which is in charge of issuing dollars, plays a key role in shaping monetary policy and economic stability in the United States. It also has a major impact on exchange rates, investment funds and stock markets around the world.
The US dollar is considered the most important currency in the world due to the dominant role of the United States in the global economy. The political and economic stability of the US, its extensive financial system and the dollar's role as a major reserve currency make it trusted by investors and central banks. Furthermore, the widespread adoption of the dollar in international trade transactions strengthens its position as the most widely used currency for international payments.
US dollars are used to make most settlements and determine the values of the most lucrative assets such as gold, platinum and other precious bullion, food, oil and many others. Consequently, the USD exchange rate has a significant impact on the prices of these raw materials, which are denominated in dollars.
A few facts about the USD
- The majority, which is about 60%, of the dollar notes are in circulation outside the United States.
- Dollar notes bear the likenesses of some of America's most famous presidents (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses Grant), but not only that - there are also other prominent figures: Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton, who contributed to the creation of the new currency, the dollar, and Benjamin Franklin, one of the authors of the Declaration of Independence. Coins (dollars and cents), on the other hand, feature the slogan "In God we trust" and motifs such as the eagle, likenesses of presidents or architectural elements.
- Interestingly, any dollar note, regardless of the year of manufacture, is legal tender. So, even if someone had dollars from the 19th century, they could easily pay for purchases in the US with them today.
- Although any dollar note is legal tender, when going on an exotic trip, it is advisable to carry $100 notes and those issued after 2004. Older notes may prove to be unconvertible in many countries in Asia or Africa, and smaller denominations may result in an inferior exchange rate.
FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions
What does the abbreviation USD stand for?
The abbreviation USD stands for the US dollar (United States Dollar), which is the official currency of the United States. The letters ‘US’ refer to the issuing country, whilst „D” stands for ‘Dollar’. It is the international currency code established in accordance with the ISO 4217 standard.
Which countries outside the US use the dollar?
The US dollar is the official currency in eight sovereign states outside the United States. These are: Ecuador, El Salvador, Panama, Zimbabwe, East Timor, Micronesia, the Marshall Islands and Palau. Furthermore, the currency is widely accepted in global tourism.
Why are commodity prices quoted in dollars?
This stems from the US’s dominant position in the global economy and the role of the USD as the main reserve currency. As a result, most international settlements and valuations of strategic assets, such as crude oil, gas and gold, are denominated in dollars.
How do the Fed’s decisions affect the dollar exchange rate?
The US Federal Reserve System (Fed) shapes US monetary policy by regulating interest rates and issuing currency. These decisions directly affect the yields on US assets, which in turn have a strong impact on global exchange rates, stock markets and the market valuation of the USD.
Why is the dollar considered a „safe haven”?
The dollar is regarded as the most stable currency, trusted by central banks and investors alike. This stems from the political and economic stability of the US and its extensive financial system. In times of global crisis, capital naturally flows into the USD as a safe-haven asset.
What were the consequences of the dollar’s departure from the gold standard in 1973?
The abolition of the dollar’s link to the gold standard in 1973 effectively brought the Bretton Woods system to an end. This event ushered in an era of floating exchange rates, in which the value of the USD began to depend solely on market mechanisms, investor confidence and Fed policy.
What factors influence fluctuations in the dollar exchange rate?
The USD exchange rate is influenced by the Fed’s actions, US macroeconomic indicators (inflation, GDP, unemployment) and the stability of the US economy. Global demand for dollar-denominated commodities and the level of market confidence during periods of geopolitical turmoil are also significant factors.
Where do the name and symbol of the dollar come from?
The name derives from the „thaler” – a silver coin from the 16th century. In the Spanish colonies, meanwhile, „dollaro” coins with a value of 8 reales were minted. This gave rise to the symbol of a crossed-out S, which evolved from the old way of writing the value of one dollar as an eight in brackets.
